That is the false picture, its the picture of a russian general, i suspect one of his relatives with the same name.

Contradictory information

The article directly contradicts the Russian WP article on the same topic. It most probably uses the picture of a different person with the same name since the person depicted served in the Russian army.--Catlemur (talk) 16:47, 7 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. This is a bit of a conundrum, isn't it? I believe the Russian article is confusing Ernest Constantine with Ernest Frederick of Hesse-Philippsthal-Barchfeld. The Russian language version of Frederick's page includes almost the same exact information, including the incident with the cannonball near Moscow. Based on Hessische Biografie, Ernest Constantine and Ernest Frederick are definitely two different, albeit related, people.

As for the portrait on this page, I have no idea. The Hermitage Museum simply titles it ''Portrait of Ernest, Prince of Hesse-Philipstal (1771 - after 1836).'' Well, which Ernest are we talking about? The birth date would suggest Ernest Constantine, but the death date doesn't really correspond to either him or Frederick. The engraved version of the portrait here doesn't really help matters. However, the English language caption of that print does say ''Major General Prince Ernest of Hesse Phillipstahl.'' Hessische Biografie doesn't mention anything about Constantine as a major general in the Russian army, but does say he served in the Netherlands and Westphalia. Perhaps that's the source of his military promotion? It's all a bit confusing. BusterTheMighty (talk) 03:58, 27 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
